 Smoke Alarm Program

Norton Shores Fire Department: Free Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Installation Program

The Norton Shores Fire Department is committed to enhancing community safety by offering free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, along with professional installation, to residents of Norton Shores and Roosevelt Park. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of fire and carbon monoxide-related incidents, protecting the lives and well-being of our residents.

Program Highlights

  • Eligibility: Available on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last.
  • Installation Requirement: Alarms must be installed by Fire Department personnel to ensure proper setup and functionality.

Why Carbon Monoxide Alarms Are Essential

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly. It is often referred to as the "silent killer" because it is undetectable without specialized equipment. Common sources of CO include malfunctioning furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, and other fuel-burning appliances. Symptoms of CO poisoning can include headaches, dizziness, confusion, and, in severe cases, death.

Installing CO alarms in your home can:

  • Detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide early.
  • Alert you and your family in time to evacuate and seek help.
  • Provide peace of mind by ensuring your home is protected from this invisible threat.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Features

  • Smoke Alarms:
    • 10-Year Lithium Battery: Equipped with a sealed lithium power supply, eliminating the need for battery replacements throughout the alarm's lifespan.
    • Automatic Activation: Alarms activate upon attachment to the mounting bracket.
    • Hush™ Feature: Temporarily silences nuisance alarms. The hush mode can only be activated during alarm conditions.
  • Carbon Monoxide Alarms:
    • Digital Display: Provides real-time CO levels for added awareness (depending on model availability).
    • Advanced Sensors: Accurately detect CO presence and alert occupants promptly.

How to Request Alarms

To request free smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and schedule an installation, we kindly ask you to provide some basic household information, including the number of existing alarms. This information is collected solely to meet the requirements of our grant program and to ensure its continued funding. Please rest assured that all data will remain confidential and not be shared or sold.
